If you really want a sense of Miami’s Art Deco legacy, don’t simply visit the Deco District – stay in one of its original 1930s hotels. Stepping into Essex House by Clevelander is as close as you’ll come to stepping into Miami history, with its fabulous neon-bathed, palm-fringed stucco facade and retro-inspired interiors. In other parts of the property, you’ll find terrazzo flooring and marble tiling, also original to the 1938 design.
If you want a sense of the Miami today, you need only step out of Essex House – you couldn’t be more in-the-middle-of-it-all if you tried. You’re on Collins Avenue, which means that along with the beach being a short stroll away, the most popular restaurants, boutiques, bars and clubs surround you in every other direction.
