Gressoney-La-Trinite: the thriving heart of the main resort of Monterosa Ski, the slopes of Gressoney host some of the finest ski runs and some breathtaking runs.
In vast flatland dominated by the impressive Lyskamm glacier, enclosed between two steep walls and covered in a rich, larch forest, Gressoney-La-Trinite is the last town centre at the start of the valley in which the Lys River flows, at 1,627 metres above sea level.
The town centre hosts the parish church of the Santissima Trinita dating back to 1671 and built on the foundation of a fifteenth-century building.
During medieval times, this district belonged to the Bishops of Sion and was populated by shepherds from the neighbouring valley: the Walser.
The Walser are a race of Germanic origin that arrived in these parts over eight centuries ago, passing through Colle del Teodulo; they settled for good in Valle di Gressoney after previously moving around the valleys, from where they get their name. Their culture is still reflected today in their architecture, in their traditions and their language. In Gressoney a typical form of Walser, called Titsch, with clear German influences is often spoken.
Gressoney-La-Trinite is an internationally renowned, Alpine resort. It is equipped and frequented for alpine ascents in the Monte Rosa chain and to practice all winter sports: it forms part of the Monterosa Ski area, which, with its 180 kilometres of pistes, is one of the largest and most picturesque in Europe.
Gressoney-La-Trinite is the departure point for the Alta Via no.1 road in Valle dAosta, an excursion itinerary that follows an upland route and which connects Gressoney to Courmayeur.
In Gressoney-La-Trinite (which has a wonderful cross-country piste) the ski lifts reach up to 3,000 metres in Passo dei Salati, on the border with Piedmonte. Stafal is the gateway to more enthusiastic, off-piste skiing routes that arrive at the Monte Rosa, up to 4,459 metres to Punta Gnifetti and the Regina Margherita hut, the highest refuge in Europe.

Upon arrival at the top of Sarezza three-seater chairlift, youre asked to choose, left or right? The piste on your right (Sarezza) is of medium difficulty and leads to the two Ostafa slopes. These two runs are definitely easier - but the great slope, the run that leads across the woods from the Plateau of Crest to reach Champoluc (Pistone del Bosco), is of some technical difficulty, not to be recommended for absolute beginners.
For others however Pistone del Bosco is definitely on the must do list as it is one of the most enthralling slopes of our area. The whole distance from Sarezza (2.703m) to Champoluc (1.580 m.) is among the longest descents served by a programmed snow-making system in the Alps. But lets go back to the top of Sarezza. What about choosing the way on your left? Skiing down on the northern side the first slope you will see is Vatourna, a medium difficult piste that could cause you some worry when you first set out. Dont fret though, after the first 150m or so it flattens out into an enjoyable and easy to navigate motor way.
On Vatourna, the snow keeps its excellent quality all year long. Its main characteristic is that it doesnt skirt any ski lift and is located in a pretty, unspoiled point. After this exhilarating 3,300 m. run you are forced to make another decision. Do you take the chairlift on your left and go back to the Champoluc-Crest area, or go right and connect with the Frachey area and the facilities leading to Gressoney:.
