Casa Papagaio Verde has not only been innovatively designed to make sure it has the best possible sea views, it’s also immaculately kept by the friendly owner, Filomena. From its secluded setting on the slopes above Funchal, the gardens look over the hotel’s own cultivated terraces. And you’re welcome to select your own fruit, vegetables and salads from here.

The house is full of character, too. Filomena has chosen examples of Portuguese furniture and works of art, alongside Madeiran artefacts and embroidery, to give it lots of rich colour. With three bedrooms in the main building and four studio apartments, there’s a choice of bed and breakfast or self catering accommodation. The apartments have all the kitchen essentials, an en suite bathroom, cable TV and sofas or armchairs. Two are located next to the swimming pool and have their own terraces with sea views. The third joins the main house and looks onto the garden, but still has a sea view.

The largest of the self catering studios is in fact a detached two-floor cottage with a large comfy bedroom, a balcony and sea views. On the bottom floor of the apartment there's also a sofa bed and plenty of space for the living room area.

Another interesting feature of this property is the levada that runs through it. Follow its course and you can walk to Funchal or Câmara de Lobos.
