If variety's the spice of life, then the Catalonia Riviera Maya highlights it to the full. It's right on the beach, so you can flit between the pools and the sands in seconds.

There are four pools to choose from, all with a built-in whirlpool, and three of them come with a separate section for kids. If you're staying in a Privilege room, you'll have exclusive access to a fifth pool.  

The restaurant count reaches seven, including a pair of buffets and a whole handful of à la cartes, which tick off everything from a steakhouse to a Japanese joint. And, if you're in a Privilege room, you've got exclusive access to an eighth restaurant that dishes up breakfast, lunch and dinner with sweeping sea views thrown in. There are seven bars here, too, plus a couple of snack places. If you're in a Privilege room, you'll have an exclusive bar on the beach as well.

Archery, aerobics, and tennis are just some of the sports you can join in with on dry land. As for the watersports options, scuba diving*, snorkelling and kayaking are some of the most popular picks.

Treat yourself to a pamper at the spa*, which is kitted out with everything from a hydrotherapy area to couples' treatment rooms and massage booths. The spa's just for grown-ups, but there's a handful of beauty treatments for over 12s, too, like manicures, pedicures, and facials. You can keep up with your fitness routine in the gym if you fancy a workout.

You can sing and dance-along to a show every night at the indoor theatre, and there's a weekly pool or beach party on the agenda as well. Little ones, meanwhile, can get their teeth into a bunch of activities at the kids' club.
